Music and The Next Mozart?

by Mike Fallon

With the population of the world being many times what it was during Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's lifetime you might think that the world would have produced several more musical child prodigies at the genius level of Mozart.

However, the question is... has it produced any more at all at the genius level of Mozart?

While the world probably abounds with musical child prodigies on every type of musical instrument as far as performance, it is the amazing musical creative genius and output of the young Mozart that really stands out among Wunderkinder (from German: "wonder children"). We often hear about some young child amazing the world with their musical prowess and soon they are proclaimed as "The Next Mozart". For a child to be touted as a musical prodigy and then be compared to Mozart------that is a very tall order indeed.

You could call this an article that will continue to grow. Usually via YouTube I will present videos I encounter about some "Next Mozart". If you know of any next Mozarts out in the music world then let me know and I may add them to this article.

Emily Bear

First up, I present a video, produced by WGN-TV, Chicago called "The Next Mozart? 6-Year Old Piano Prodigy Wows All" This was uploaded to YouTube on May 15, 2008 and supplied with the following comments: "6-year old Emily Bear has wowed audiences from the White House to her own house. Playing the piano since age 3, Emily also composes her own music. Has WGN-TV discovered the next Mozart?"

Alma Deutscher

Alma Elizabeth Deutscher, born in 2005, is a composer, pianist and violinist who lives with her parents in Dorking, Surrey, England. She is being compared to Mozart but she actually beat Mozart in two areas:

  • Mozart could play and name notes at age 3. Alma could do that at age 2.
  • Mozart was first writing music at age 5. Alma was doing that at age 4.
Now being hailed as the "World's newest musical genius", Alma Deutscher recently composed her own opera at the age of 7.

Here is an ABC News Video about Alma Deutscher that aired October 23, 2012.
